Introduced in 1985, the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar ref. 3940 became one of the defining watches of the Geneva manufacture during the second half of the 20th century. Its remarkably balanced proportions and harmonious arrangement of multiple calendar indications have established it as a benchmark among automatic perpetual calendar wristwatches.
At the heart of reference 3940 is the celebrated automatic caliber 240 Q, an exceptionally refined ultra-thin movement featuring a micro-rotor and perpetual calendar mechanism. The complication displays the day, date and month while automatically accounting for months of different lengths and leap years, complemented by moon phases, a leap-year indicator and a 24-hour indication.
This rare 1992 example is crafted in 18 kt rose gold and retains both of its original interchangeable casebacks: a sapphire crystal display back that reveals the beautifully finished caliber 240 Q and a second solid rose gold caseback. The brown crocodile leather strap is paired with its original Patek Philippe buckle in matching rose gold.
Particularly noteworthy is the extraordinary state of preservation: the watch remains virtually like new and is accompanied by its complete original set, including the distinctive presentation winder box, as well as a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives. This exceptional combination of rarity, condition and completeness makes this ref. 3940 an especially compelling example for the discerning Patek Philippe collector.
